More Americans reached retirement age in 2024 than at any year in history. Fewer than half of these retirees will receive an employer pension, and 68% of employees save automatically in default retirement investments. A combination of increasing responsibility for funding a lifestyle coupled with reliance on automated investments mean that few are equipped to create a retirement plan on their own.

Michael discusses trends in longevity among higher-income workers and the implications on the cost of retirement, how demographics will affect Social Security and the science of when to claim benefits, changes in expectations of returns on U.S. investments and their impact on retirement income planning, and what the implications of investment and longevity risk on lifestyles.

He concludes with new consumer research that shows that consumers spend differently from investments and income and the importance of using a goal-based plan to help today’s retiree live well in an era of longer lifespans and lower expected returns.
